3 Easy Ways To Maintain Your Siding

Investing in new siding is a great way to enhance the appearance of your home. It’s essential for siding to remain in good condition to protect your house from the elements. Damaged siding can provide an opening for water to get into the home, causing the wood in your walls to swell, warp, or decay. Mold may also begin to spread inside the house, which can be hazardous to health.

Many of these problems can be avoided by getting in the habit of maintaining your siding. Here are three simple ways to keep your siding in optimal condition.

Have your Siding Cleaned Once or Twice a Year

It’s recommended to wash your siding at least one time annually. This is often done with a power washer or using soap and water applied with a non-abrasive material. Mold and mildew can quickly begin to spread on siding, causing unsightly discoloration. Moss or other unwanted growth may also start to appear on your siding. Once it’s washed, your home will look revitalized, and the lifespan of your siding will be protected.

Schedule Regular Landscaping

Grass, plants, dirt, and debris should be kept at least 6 inches away from siding. Routinely schedule lawn care maintenance to clear away any material collecting at the base of the siding. Vegetation and mud contain moisture which will damage your siding over time. Pests are also attracted to any decaying organic matter around your home. Performing landscaping upkeep is especially important in the fall when trees start to shed their leaves.

Gutter Maintenance is Important

A clogged gutter can cause water to overflow and cascade down the siding, increasing the likelihood of moisture making its way into the house. The rain will also collect around the foundation of your home, potentially submerging the bottom portion of your siding in water. To avoid this, discuss a roof maintenance routine with a trusted roofer to ensure your downspouts and gutters are always clear.
